foUNTAIN OF YOUTH
Recordings that Ponce de León kept of his two voyages have been long since lost in history. The best information concerning his journeys comes to us from the writings of Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas, who was appointed Chief Historian of the Indies in 1596, a few decades after Ponce de Leon's journeys. Herrera's information is likely third-hand at best. He mentions the Fountain of Youth in reference to Ponce's first voyage to Florida in 1513. Here's what Herrera had to say about Ponce de León and the Fountain of Youth.

While sailing south along the Florida coast, Ponce de Leon noticed the strong ocean current. Today, we this current is the Gulf Stream. Ponce de Leon's discovery led to a new sailing route between Spain and North America. The Gulf Stream's powerful current helps ships sailing from Florida northeast across the Atlantic Ocean On de Leon's next voyage, quite by accident, Ponce de Leon discovered the Gulf Stream, which flows out of the Gulf of Mexico. This stream would become extremely important to sailors due to its strong current. De Leon returned to Puerto Rico.
